More people use Church food banks in Famagusta area this year

More people have been using food banks this year compared with the last one, according to Famagusta bishopric Archimandrite and food bank director Augustinos Kkaras.

“The reason why we have assisted more people is because many of them have lost their jobs in the restaurant and tourism business this year due to the pandemic,” Kkaras said.

“So far, we provided food to 400 families, whereas last year only 300 asked for help. We expect even more families using food banks during the Christmas period and around the New Year.”

Kkaras added that, aside from food, many families are also in dire need of money for their children’s school and university fees as well as to pay their house bills.

“We are also expecting some guidance from the government so we can plan the distribution of the food according to this year’s demand.”

He also said the bishopric’s food banks cooperates with various companies in the Famagusta district that donate food all year round, as well as individuals, “some of whom contribute with donations every day.”

Kkaras said the bishopric is also collecting money to help the families that are most in need this year.
